Update from hospital on unknown illness
Johannesburg, Tuesday 7 September 2010 Netcare Olivedale Hospital today issued an update following the death of two brothers who died after being hospitalised. The hospital confirmed that no new cases of the illness have been reported to date. Also, close personal contacts remain in good health.
Netcare Olivedale hospital again confirms that casual contact with family, friends, hospital staff or previous casual contact with the deceased do not pose a risk. Precautionary measures will continue and close contacts and medical personnel will be monitored. It added that two healthcare professionals at the hospital had presented with high fevers overnight but after being thoroughly investigated their ailments were found to be unrelated to the case of the deceased. Their symptoms differed considerably and were not of a serious nature. Both have subsequently been discharged. Key features of the illness included fevers and liver failure.
Diagnostic investigations revealed nothing conclusive to date and will continue until a direct cause of death can be established. Results of additional tests are anticipated in the next week. The hospital committed itself to daily updates and said that it will continue working closely with the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), a division of the National Health Laboratory Service, and the Department of Health.
Hospital management asked that media continue to respect the privacy of the grieving family and loved ones of the deceased and have thanked the media for their understanding and consideration. It reassured the public that, as always, everything necessary is being done to ensure the safety and wellbeing of patients, healthcare professionals and hospital staff members. Meetings between the NICD, the Department of Health and hospital management are continuing on a daily basis.
